Nothing ruins a good trail ride quite like your ATV falling into a ditch. Once your quad is stuck, getting it unstuck can be arduous. That’s why the experts at Anderson Powersports Parker have created this guide to getting your ATV unstuck.

1. Use a Winch

A winch will make extricating your ATV much, much easier. Simply attach one end of the winch to the front or back of your ATV and the other end of your winch to another vehicle, and your quad will be out in no time. If you have a reason to believe that there won’t be any vehicles nearby to help you, you can pack a come-along, which is a small hand-powered winch. Regardless of which type of winch you bring along with you, make sure that you have some solid tow straps.

2. Create Your Own Anchor

If your winch isn’t a come-along and you don’t have a vehicle to tow your four wheeler out of the mud, use a large, stationary object as a makeshift anchor. A big rock or solid tree are two good examples of things you can use as an anchor. In a pinch, you can also try using a set of ice-climbing anchors or a small steel rod with an eye bolt as an anchor.

3. Bring a Shovel

If there’s no anchor available for whatever reason, your best course of action is to try to dig your tires out. If all goes well, this will give your ATV enough traction to allow you to escape. A collapsible shovel is the ideal tool for these kinds of situations since it won’t take up much space in your quad.

4. Tilt Your ATV Back and Forth

If you don’t have much in the way of tools on hand, try rocking your ATV back and forth using your body weight. By leaning into the motion, you can inch your ATV forward little by little until the wheels are able to find purchase.
